Fabulous Food
The world of culinary arts has so much to offer. I used to be the queen of the microwave. I didn't put much thought into what I was eating. I wanted simple and tasty (which in most cases meant fatty and horribly unhealthy). Then I discovered some addictive television shows that quickly turned the tables on my food ignorance. I love trying different things and throwing stuff into the pan. Sauteed asparagus is one of my newest addictions, and I've mixed all kinds of spices and sauces, attempting to make awesome marinades. I appreciate the character of a great wine, and maintain that even an inexpensive one can be fabulous (Barefoot's Cabernet Sauvignon is one such wine).
My appreciation for food and what it does to people goes beyond enjoying the taste of a decadent cake or hearty soup. Food has the power to break the ice, initiate conversation and stimulate people. Food is similar to music, without the drumbeats and arpeggios. I have to admit, a tasty bite still makes me want to get up and dance every now and again, though.
I've explored various bistros, wineries, and restaurants since I moved to Seattle almost six years ago. Some have been fabulous, others, not so much. Some have been both, depending on the night and the staff. It's always an interesting experience.
My husband and I recently discovered the fabulous and very inexpensive happy hour at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. We've been to the Bellevue location several times, and it's always a treat. If you get there right before 4:00 PM (midweek) you'll beat the mad rush of crowds and get your choice of seating. They have these wonderful Thai chicken skewers I have no trouble devouring, and their steak kabobs are so addicting with their finger-licking marinade my husband usually orders them twice. Wine and beer prices are good, and of course the ambiance is nice. If you feel like spending a bit more, the food on their main menu is simply awesome.
Another place I love is The Purple Cafe. There are several locations around town. I've been to three (Woodinville, Bellevue, and Kirkland) and each has its own unique feel while maintaining the same decor. The menu offers many choices, and the wine list is massive. I've tried only a few items they offer, but the food is always flavorful and portions are sized right.
Daniel's Broiler is another restaurant my husband and I have been to several times. Like Ruth's Chris, they offer a good happy hour with an awesome full dinner menu as well. I can't say whether Daniel's is better than Ruth's Chris or vice versa, but Daniel's in Bellevue certainly has the better view of the city! Located at the top of the Hyatt in downtown, it's a great place to impress guests or romance a lover.
Nestled in downtown Redmond is a tiny Italian restaurant my husband and I both love, La Tropea. We ate there the night he proposed, so it holds a special place in our hearts. This little hole-in-the-wall blows Olive Garden out of the water with rich, cheesy pastas, succulent chicken dishes and dense desserts.
The list goes on, and it grows all the time. I simply love great food! Check out these locations, and go find some others to love too!
