For the Love of Phlur: Fragrance Forward
Everyone wants to find the perfect signature fragrance, the elusive "soul scent". Or at least a fragrance to enjoy for more than a month before it begins collecting dust on the vanity. Oh wait, is that just me? I admit: I used to hoard fragrances. Not on purpose, but in an effort to find something I love that feels like me, I amassed a huge collection of scents ranging from softly floral and slightly fruity to robustly earthy and brightly fresh. Alas, novelties wore off and before I knew it, I had way too many bottles sitting on my dresser.
It was time to start fresh (yep, pun intended). I let go of every barely-used fragrance and felt empowered to find the ultimate “me” fragrance.
Now, about the ‘finding something that feels like me’ thing...this is the pinnacle of an ideal fragrance, but it’s easy to forget when we smell something fabulous. You buy a fragrance only to realize it doesn’t represent your genuine personality. It’s not you. Worse, it completely contradicts who you are. So in my search for something new, I focused on both notes and attitude: Do I like the way it smells and does the smell jive with my vibe? Finding something you like is tough, but finding something that’s you is tougher. And recently, (because I subconsciously have to make everything more difficult) I began considering one more thing: Will I feel good wearing it and is the fragrance safe?
Safe. That’s a loaded word. And what in the world does it have to do with perfume? Well, perfume has stuff in it, like chemicals and preservatives. I know, I know, tell me somethin’ I don’t know, right? Okay, then. Some of those ingredients aren’t awesome for your body, or the environment.
Honestly, many beauty products have questionable/weird/alarming stuff in them. Maybe you never thought about perfume being one of those products. I didn’t either, until I discovered Phlur. Cue the cymbal crash and bright light...
Phlur is the awesome fresh-approach fragrance company that’s totally transparent (except for their bottles, but more on that in a minute) and innovative. They are a certified B corporation and support sustainability. Not only do they list every single ingredient in every fragrance they make (botanical or safe synthetic), they partner with organizations to give back and protect our planet. Oh, and their perfumes are hypoallergenic, cruelty-free, vegan, and packaged with recycled materials. And those cool opaque bottles? They’re opaque to ensure each precious fragrance is protected from harmful light rays; no preservatives necessary. Win, win, win.
All of their do-gooding makes it easy to love them and their fantastic fragrances are just the cherry on top. From fresh to woodsy to spicy to floral, there’s something for everyone and you guessed it, I found a fragrance I love that feels like me. Bonus; I feel good wearing it, because… do-goodness!
My Phlur fragrance obsession is Sandara (pictured above and below), the earthy and woodsy, calming and meditative scent. It’s surprising and unique, fresh but warm with notes of forest air and oak moss. It literally feels and smells warm, which seems odd, but it’s the magic of the fragrance. Perhaps it’s the rare timur pepper, or the cashmeran. The notes create an invigorating walk through a forest, where the dry wood and leaves have been awakened by the kiss of a gentle rain. To me, it’s high-desert forest and reminds me of the summery and dusty woods of eastern Oregon. But Phlur’s own description of serene redwoods is certainly accurate.
If earthy and natural isn’t your thing, you're bound to find your perfect match in Phlur's fragrance family. Their entire line is modern and distinct and each fragrance is thoughtfully constructed and bursting with character. Consider Hanami, a light and creamy pop of fig and hazelnut freshness. Greylocke is a bright awakening of sharp vetiver and pine. Olmsted & Vaux is classy and refined, blending shiso leaf and whiter ginger. Moab is spicy and sweet with notes of pepper and vanilla, and Hepcat is smokey and rich with tobacco and saffron. Siano is an energized floral, alive with green pepper and rich cognac, while their latest addition, Ameline, is classic rose with a modern twist of pink pepper and patchouli. Phlur gets the importance of finding a fragrance that fits your personality, and each creation has its own identity and mood; with images and sounds perfectly attuned.
Phlur has redefined the perfume-finding process. Take your pick, take your time, indulge and discover what moves you, and what is you. Sample any three for $18 and (bonus!) should/when you decide to invest in an entire bottle, that $18 goes toward your purchase. Score.
So, go forth and smell good. And feel good, too. And don’t forget to be you in the process.
