Cereal For Dinner

Cupcake Wars. Chopped. Man Vs. Food. I'll admit, I'm no expert cook. In fact, I'm still learning the basics. But thanks to the aforementioned shows, I'm developing a new fondness for food. The effort that goes into the preparations, the reason we love it so much, and the essential harmony between all the items on the plate have all started to intrigue me.

Not too long ago, most of my meals consisted of things heated in the microwave, and even though I'm trying to cook more, I have to admit I'm still nuking food more often than not. In this fast-paced world, we're pressed for time, and we often forget the importance of a good meal. It can be summarized best by some dialogue by Hugh Jackman's character in 'Kate & Leopold': "Where I come from, the meal is the result of reflection and study." Food meant more a hundred years ago, even fifty years ago, than it does today. People sat down and ate dinner together, discussing their day, current events... it was bigger than the fun night out with your friends. It was the one time everyone could relax and discuss their lives with each other.

That day has come and gone, but I still believe food has the ability to bring people together. There are few things that match the beauty of a great meal and quality time spent with people you enjoy. I've said it many times: The Lord gave us a beautiful way to nourish our bodies! We were given roots and herbs and plants and fruit and meat to fuel our bodies as we go about our day. He could have just said we'd take a pill to get our energy, but instead decided to give us the chance to prepare delicious meals ourselves. Brilliant.

So indulge and feed your creativity! Watch some shows to get yourself inspired and go for it. Even if you swear you can't cook (like me), step up to the stove anyway. Although I have to admit, I still love cereal for dinner.
