My Sky Full of Stars/You
There are these things in my life, these many, unique, shining things that are a constant source of inspiration and happiness. They make me laugh and love and strive to do better. I wrote a song years ago called “Satellites”, referring to these important things, but that description isn’t entirely accurate: It implies that they’re all orbiting around me, making me the most important thing, and that is anything but true.
I was in my car, listening to my iPod collection on random as always, when suddenly, “A Sky Full Of Stars” began to play. I love that song. It’s encouraging and beautiful and sparkly and all the things that I wish my own songs could be. Then it hit me, and I had a moment of overwhelming gratitude for the people in my life: You’re my sky full of stars.
There are so many of you, and you’re all just as unique and important as the next. I’m continually awed by all of you, the things you accomplish, the lives you live and the joy you share. I often think to myself (not in a jealous or envious way, but an amazed and humbled way), I wish I could be as giving as she is, and I wish I could be as selfless as he is. Man, is she smart! What an accomplishment… he makes it look so easy. Look at that dedication and commitment! Look at that beautiful human being.
I hope you all realize how absolutely important and miraculous you all are. You guys have contributed something great to this world simply by being in it and giving yourselves away.
I admit it: I don’t take friendships or any kind of relationship lightly. I won’t befriend just anyone. I’m picky about the people I spend time with and the people I communicate with. That being said, if you’re reading this, odds are you are one of those people. It never ceases to amaze me how incredibly valuable just one person is, not to me (or at least, not just me), but to anyone, everyone. You, you matter.
You are smart. You are strong, and capable. You are the only you there is, a completely unique combination of traits, loves, likes, ideas, ideals, and feelings; all jumbled up beautifully in a gorgeous, living, functioning mess of resilient skin and bones. You are human, and so am I.
You will have triumphs, and you should celebrate them. A little self-promotion is really okay! You will experience moments of sadness, and you should feel free to express your pain; openly, without judgment. Do not be afraid of judgment: You have the freedom, the God-given right, to be yourself, and to be free.
And we should all celebrate each other, our strengths, our opinions, our loves and passions for life… even our weaknesses, which encourage us to grow, and to help each other be the best we can be. Not just for ourselves, but for the world, to make it a better place, where we can flourish and thrive.
Thus ends my moment of reflection (for the moment). So as you stand before 2015, on the edge, fresh off whatever awesomeness or challenges you’ve recently faced, don’t be afraid to fall, because you might just fly.
