100 Best Songs Ever (50-59)

We're at the halfway point of my list!

59.    5 Years / Homogenic / Bjork / 1997
If you ever wanted to write off an ex with a dedicated song, look no further. You’ve found the ultimate power girl anthem! Every track on Homogenic is bursting with explosions, but this one screams louder than most of the others. After my first listen I played it again. Then I played it again. It became a favorite of mine instantly. The commanding synths, the crushing beats, the soaring strings, Bjork’s growls and shrieks: Oh man, do I love this! This perfectly sums up a strong woman’s outlook on a weak man: “I’m so bored with cowards that say they want love, but then can’t handle.” It’s a great way to decompress, and it’s great as a vocal warm up, too.

58.    You’ve Been Flirting Again (Flirt As A Promise) / Telegram / Bjork / 1996
I admit when I heard the original version of this I wasn’t all that impressed. Then I listened to this version and went ballistic (in a good way). What starts off as a quiet and dreamy lullaby quickly swells into a string-laden ode to love. It ends way too soon and I usually have to hit the replay button. This is part of its charm, a quick little desperate number that leaves you coming back for more. Well done!

57.    Venus As A Boy (Anglo American Extension) / Venus As A Boy / Bjork / 1993
Yes, I know there are lots of Bjork tracks on this list, but can you blame me? This is so laid back, sensual, sparkly and jazzy I can’t help but burst into song and sing along. Of course the original version is wonderful too, but I like the extra drums here: It’s that much more intense. The emotions are enhanced. Bjork never fails to deliver and her longing is perfectly portrayed here.

56.    The River / Ropin’ The Wind / Garth Brooks / 1991
Garth always had the innate ability to attract almost anybody to his music, country fan or not. This is far and away my favorite song of his. I love a lot of them, but I like the flow of this one (no pun intended). The melody is a little gospel, a little country, folk and even reminds me of something new age. I love the opening instrumentation and the vocal break toward the end is very powerful.

55.    Headphones / Whatever We Wanna / LeAnn Rimes / 2006
Okay, I admit: This song is not the smartest, most intuitive in the world, but I love it anyway. Fun to sing, it gets your feet moving and has a really peppy, sexy vibe. The country rocking electric guitar is a nice touch to what would otherwise be a club track. It was remixed by Almighty specifically for this purpose anyway, but this album version is short and sweet with sly innuendos and popping percussion. LeAnn sounds like she’s having so much fun here, and it makes you want to join in.

54.    Strong / Whatever We Wanna / LeAnn Rimes / 2006
A pop country song with gospel-tinged lyrics, I’ve always loved this song. LeAnn’s voice is in top form here, and she never does too much, keeping the performance straight and, not surprisingly, strong. She’s front and center, without any additional vocal harmonies. Somehow, this makes the song that much bolder and personal. The bridge brings me close to tears every time: It’s got such a wonderful goosebump-inducing quality. Like other songs on Whatever We Wanna, there are electric guitars and strings thrown in with twinkles of electronic piano arpeggios. It’s a great inspiring mix.

53.    Some People / This Woman / LeAnn Rimes / 2005
At the close of the album, this song really struck a chord with me. LeAnn said when she was recording this, she was nearly in tears, and you can really hear that passion in her voice. Unlike many songs on this list, I chose this one more for the lyrics than the music. It’s exactly how I feel about love and relationships. I love the bluesy touch, the desperation and the buildup to the brilliant bridge.

52.    Suddenly (Riva Radio Mix) / The Best of LeAnn Rimes (Remixed) / LeAnn Rimes / 2004
Yet another song that sounds better as a remix, I love belting this out. Some criticized LeAnn for taking a step into the pop world on Twisted Angel, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. She has the voice to pull it off. This remix in particular shows her in top form, portraying angst and anxiety with ease. The melody is further enhanced by airy chords against intense acoustic guitar and extended reverb. It’s a little slice of dancefloor heaven.

51.    Sexual (Li Da Di) (Plasma Trance Remix) / Remixed / Amber / 2000
You’d never guess by the title but my mom loves this remix. Many mixes of this song were produced, including a slow, mellow chillout track. This one is my favorite. It’s short and sweet, but has plenty of spice too. Amber had one wave of major success in the United States with “This is Your Night” in 1996, but this song was a big hit as well. It’s another great, thumping dance track for a drive down the freeway.

50.    Music (Deep Dish Dot Com Remix) / Music / Madonna / 2000
This is one of my favorite remixes of all time! I always come back to this when I need a surge of energy. It’s a very long mix too, so you can really get into it. The bass is what gives this song its character; a pulsing, spooky sounding thing that drives on forever. The memorable guitar bleeps from the original album version as well as other signature sounds are thrown in which gives this song the perfect balance. When this plays in the car it makes me want to go 100 mph! It’s not just another excuse for a dance club anthem: It’s a serious musical masterpiece.
