More is More
There are some things that work better in moderation. Too much makeup is almost never a good thing, especially the use of excessive lipstick, resulting in the dreaded kiss stain or even worse, clown comparisons. Large quantities of any food also lead to horrible things, and however much you may love that delectable dessert, it will come back to haunt you should you overindulge. Delicious wines that compliment the most exquisite dishes aren’t even good in excess, and can make fools of even the most refined person. Yes, there are some things we must maintain self-control with, and truly, less is more.
But then, there are the other things, the things that I love to love, and love to flaunt and talk about. I love roads that go on forever along the coast and let me watch sunsets that seem to never end, and if my car magically filled itself with gas I would continue driving for as long as possible (or at least until a bathroom break was necessary). I also love music that mirrors the grandness and wide expanse of sky during those drives, and I really think that it’s not possible for music to be too busy. Some people love simple songs, songs that consist of soft piano and gentle rhythms with shy vocals and sweet sentiments. I’m more dramatic, and demand songs that command your attention.
Throw in more cymbals, fun beats, syncopated synths and rich chords: I am so there. Songs that build to a great climax are awesome, but songs that maintain a climactic feeling throughout are heaven. Those are the dangerous ones, the songs that make me violently happy, as Bjork would say. If you know that song by Bjork, you know what I mean. If you don’t know it, it refers to being so insanely enthused and energetic you’re doing things way out of character. Dangerous things like speeding constantly, jumping off roofs for the fun of it and getting too drunk. I have never personally reached that point, but there have been times I’ve been so into what I’m listening to, I lose track of where I am or what I’m doing.
I also do not believe it’s possible to love too much, unless you consider the person who loves someone that simply cannot love them back. In those situations, pain often follows. But if love is reciprocated, a lot of love is great, and close to perfection. There’s a reason most songs deal with love on some level: It’s everywhere, we want it, all the time. We are insatiable when it comes to love, regardless of how tough or strong we try or pretend to be.
So have some more. Get outside a little more, and take a walk. Appreciate more. Notice more. Love yourself more! Listen to the music you really love on headphones more, with the lights out and the volume cranked up. And sometimes, every so often, eat one more piece of cake.
