Get Real

A decade ago, when I said ‘get real’, I was essentially asking someone to prove a story. I also used the phrase as a form of expression when I was surprised. Nowadays, I rarely say it, and when I do, it’s usually because I’m using it in the literal sense: It’s time to get real.

The whole world seems to be catching on to this. Even in celebrity circles it’s encouraged, and more and more people are sharing details and secrets only close friends and family would know. It intrigues and saddens me simultaneously. On one hand, such honesty is awesome and it’s great to see how normal everyone really is. On the other hand, the days of mysterious and sultry movie stars are gone. The magical effect has dimmed and even though it hasn’t completely gone out, I have a feeling Hollywood will never be as glamorous as it once was.

That said, perhaps it’s a good thing we’re all on a level playing field. Paparazzi have played a huge part in this, exposing stars on their worst days, which is terribly inconsiderate, but eye-opening. The biggest culprit of the sudden surge of realism is probably social networking. It’s contagious in good and bad ways, like a great laugh
or an infectious disease. People share inspiring things and the next day share too much information. I admit I’m one of those people. I’m willing to bet everyone is one of those people.

So why am I obsessing about this? As usual, the roots of my thoughts are imbedded in personal matters, and the reason I’m elaborating is because I feel like it’s time to let it go, open up, be honest… yes, it’s time to ‘get real’.

So over the next few weeks, I'll be revealing things about myself that only a select few know. It will be interesting to see what reactions I get, and I hope I can inspire others to put themselves out there. After all, we're only human, we're not living in a movie and we're certainly not perfect. It's time to get real! Stay tuned...
