Keeping Christmas

Even if you’re not typically cheery or patient, or even if you don’t celebrate the holidays, there’s something about this time of year that creeps into you. It gets into even the biggest scrooge’s heart and transforms ever so slightly. It’s the feeling that makes you want to
give, to contemplate selflessness just a little more and do something good for the world. If only we could hold onto that feeling for the rest of the year.

Some people do it effortlessly, but most of us inevitably fall back into our routines. Maybe it’s all because of the New Year. Right after we’re encouraged to give of ourselves, we’re influenced to focus entirely on ourselves to improve and perfect our lives by making all kinds of resolutions. It’s unfortunate timing.

In an ideal world, we’d all make a resolution to constantly be more focused on the rest of the world around us, and not so concerned about our own lives. Sure, you have to put some thought into yourself, take care of yourself and keep your goals in mind. But what would happen if every single person put someone or something else first more often?

As Christmas rolls toward us so quickly, I’m keeping all this in mind, and hoping I can keep that magical feeling of the season buried deep enough that selfishness can’t grab it and yank it away. Sometimes it’s all about you, but not always. You’ll have your moments, but you can’t always have a moment. Sometimes it’s your time to shine, and other times you should sit quietly on the sidelines.

That said, I’ve got a long list of goals to reach, things I want to accomplish with my music and things that I want to make better in my life. But I’m adding ‘keeping Christmas’ to that list, and I urge everyone to do the same.
